Raleigh, NC — An adventure that began on March 30, 2012 to raise funds and awareness of children of all abilities came to fruition on Tuesday, October 9th as Tommy Freeman completed the Appalachian Trail which encompasses fourteen states from Georgia to Maine and totals more than 2,178 miles. Hiking for the Stars, a fundraising event to benefit the vital programs and services for students at Learning Together, raised over $28,500. “I wanted to combine my love for the outdoors with a passion for helping others with special needs,” Tommy stated, “Having worked with individuals with developmental disabilities at an older stage of life, the programs that Learning Together provides early on are critical for individuals reaching their full potential.”
With each step he took and every person he met along the way, Tommy inspired countless people to get involved and step up to make a difference in the lives of the young children served at Learning Together. Over 100 companies, individuals and local businesses came together to support him in his quest to bring awareness to the developmental, educational and health needs of children of all abilities. Sponsors for Hiking for the Stars included: CARQUEST, Cisco, Great Outdoors Provision Company and Smokey’s Shack.
Tommy set a goal of $35,000 when he started the trail and over $28,500 has been raised to date. Those interested can help him reach his goal by making a donation in honor of his completion of the trail by visiting the Hiking for the Stars website at www.learningtogether.org/hikingforthestars
