I will always be passionate about Learning Together. Their mission, programming, and willingness to understand the needs of young children and families speaks to all of my core concerns about helping young children grow into healthy adults. My family continues to benefit directly from Learning Together. Over 22 years ago our then 18 month old daughter, Elizabeth, attended as a typically developing child. Folks wondered why we chose that program. I wondered why they would not consider it.

Some of her playmates were like her, some very different. Not only was there diversity racially and socially, there as a diversity in needs. One of her very good friends “could not see”, one was in a wheelchair, one had downs syndrome, another a bit more “shy.” On Valentines Day, these little toddlers greeted their parents singing Stevie Wonder’s song “I just called to say I love you” in SIGN!!! My heart was delighted.

Elizabeth learned that each child is special. No matter what.

Additionally, Elizabeth benefited from the testing and services that the children received. As parents, we were very well prepared for entrance into the public school system. We understood her uniqueness, and our daughter was not afraid of sitting at the lunch table in kindergarten with a child who was different from her.

Now, Elizabeth has chosen education as her career path, and she is working in New England with a school that has a very diverse population, internationally and economically. She is very happy, feels at home, and I have marveled at her ability to ferret out the distinction of each child’s concerns when they are far from home.

One more thing: I want you to understand about Learning Together’s value to our community. Since 2000, Learning Together has been a leader in serving children with mental health concerns. Their willingness to advocate for these young children and their families is impressive.

Consider joining me in supporting a place where each child is honored for their distinct specialness.
