Community Advocacy
Over the past five years, the number of Developmental Day Centers (DDC) has been decreasing. Currently, there are only three Certified Developmental Day Centers in Wake County.
We work to stabilize childcare and expand access to quality early education.
Our team led efforts to successfully increase the statewide reimbursement rate for preschoolers receiving special education services. Learning Together builds equity through education and empowers our community to address racism and ableism across North Carolina. Our work at the local and state levels helps ensure that more children have access to high-quality early education.
Extending Child Care Compensation Grants
Since 2021, Child Care Stabilization Grants have supported childcare programs’ efforts to address workforce compensation and turnover to increase availability for families. That funding will run out in June of this year. Without a state investment, the childcare field is facing a funding cliff that will be catastrophic, leading to more childcare teachers leaving the field, additional childcare program closures, and less availability of childcare for working parents.
Additional measures are needed to ensure that children and families in every corner of North Carolina have access to high-quality early education. Programs like childcare subsidy assistance and Smart Start help provide affordable early childhood opportunities to working families. Alongside our community partners, we’re advocating for:
- $95 million annually to fund a new childcare subsidy rate structure to help childcare programs serve working families in their communities.
- $10 million annually for Smart Start to provide statewide early childhood infrastructure that supports childcare, children’s health and developmental outcomes, early literacy, and families with young children in all 100 counties.
